Untouchables - The Dalit awakening
Who are the Dalits?
They are approximately 300 million people who are deemed "untouchable" and
comprise the lowest rung of the Hindu caste system. Since the origin of this
system 3,000 years ago, the Dalits have lived in bondage to the code of caste.
They have been unable to escape their fate and are deprived of even the most
basic liberties and privileges, including the freedom to decide where to live,
work and worship.
We invite you to learn more about the widespread opportunity the Lord has given
Gospel for Asia to share His love with the Dalits.
How is Gospel for Asia reaching the Dalits
The Dalit's cry for freedom reached a climax on November 4, 2001, when Dalit
leaders led their people in rejecting the system that enslaves them.
In a brief statement, Dr. K.P. Yohannan, President of Gospel for Asia, spoke to
the 100,000 Dalits that gathered that historic day: "My precious brothers and
sisters, I come to you today speaking on behalf of Christ, His love, and His
mercy for us all. Jesus came to set the captives free. And He Himself said that
whoever the Son sets free is free indeed ... We love you with Christ's love,
unconditionally and always."
Since 2001, thousands of Dalits have begun searching for a new faith. This is an
incredible opportunity for GFA missionaries to share the love of Christ with
them!
With potentially millions coming to Christ, Gospel for Asia's priority is to
produce more Gospel literature, record radio broadcasts and send out trained
native missionaries to reach them. In addition, with illiteracy rates as high as
90 percent in some Dalit communities, providing education is a very tangible way
of sharing Jesus' love.
With God's help and by His grace, Gospel for Asia is committed to investing
resources and energies into these areas in order to reach the vast harvest of
Dalits.
The Lord led Gospel for Asia to begin small primary schools for the Dalit
children in 2001. These small schools were the beginning of their Bridge of Hope
program. Today, those several schools have expanded into a program with over
30,000 children receiving love and an education.
Gospel for Asia is also sharing the love of Christ with the Dalits through adult literacy
programs and even parenting classes. Through ministry to the Dalits, they have
seen many churches planted full of new Christians praising Jesus.
